Mixed messages that widen your wardrobe

A simple way to stretch the budget and widen the wardrobe is to mix and match jackets and trousers for that semi-formal, yet pleasing look. Care must be taken not to mix colours that clash. Two principles serve as guidelines in matching colours: Colour Harmony and Colour Contrast.

Colour Harmony involves combining different shades of the same colour. For example- a navy suit with a light blue shirt and a dark blue tie.

Hues that contrast also make for effective combination. For example - while blues and greys make natural companions, blacks and whites go hand in hand remarkably well.

Here are some examples that are simple to achieve, and yet make the look noticeably special.

Navy blue chalk stripe goes well with camel/beige trousers.   Cream nailhead jacket contrasts with black trousers.   Houndstooth grey jacket harmonises with light grey trousers.
